Dulse is a type of seaweed that grows in the cold waters of the North Atlantic. It is a type of brown alge that packs a serious nutritional punch. This vegan dulse soup recipe delivers these nutrients directly into your belly, in a tasty and easy to prepare way. Recipes for dulse are sometimes hard to find as it isnt the most popular food.


  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1.5 cups finely chopped celery
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons grated peeled ginger root
  • 1/2 cup minced scallions
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/4 cake of soft tofu
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dulse flakes
  • 3 cups thinly sliced greens (spinach, bok choi, etc)
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice



1) In a soup pot on medium heat, warm the oil. Add the celery, salt, ginger, and scallions, cover, arid cook until the celery is soft, about 10 minutes. Add the water, cover, and bring to a boil.

2) Meanwhile, cut the tofu into 1/4-inch cubes. When the soup boils, add the tofu, soy sauce, and dulse flakes. Simmer uncovered for at least s minutes. Stir in the greens and cook until wilted, about 3 minutes. Just before serving, add the lime juice. Add salt to taste.

Additional Tips


A delicious and versatile soup, vegan dulse soup recipe is great fresh or left-over. If you plan to keep it around for a few days its best to leave the greens out of the last step. Add the greens to warmed soup a min or two prior to serving.
