Home Mains Vegan Sambar (Sambhar) Recipe


Sambar is a delicious variation of the very commonly eating dish Dahl. Sambar is distinguished by the use of pigeon peas and tamarind.


  • 1 cup Pigeon peas (Toor Dal)
  • 1 tbsp Tamarind
  • 3 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 2 tsp Channa Dal (split chickpea)
  • 3 tsp Coriander seed
  • 1 tsp Hing (asafoetida)
  • 2 Chilies, red
  • 1/4 cup thick coconut milk
  • 1 tsp Mustard seed
  • Cilantro to taste
  • 1 Green peppers chopped
  • 1 Large onion chopped
  • 1 Large tomato chopped


1. Boil 3 cups of water and add the toor dal. Boil until a smooth consistency is reached.

2. In another pan, fry the mustard seed, split chickpea, dhania seeds, hing, 1/4 tsp turmeric and the red chilies for a few minutes, add the green pepper and onion. Cook another min or two then add coconut milk.

3. Boil the tamarind paste, water, salt, 1/4 tsp turmeric, and tomato. Reduce heat and simmer for about 5 min.

4. Add the toor dal, coconut milk mixture and tamarind mixture together and heat.

5. Add the coriander leaves to the mixture.

Serve hot

Additional Tips

Server sambar with rice or roti, other curries and Indian pickle. Enjoy!
