Great vegan cheese substitute for those who love cheese! This recipe creates a delicious cheese-like sauce that can be used like melted cheese.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 4 tsp flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp onion/garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup oil (quality vegetable)
  • 2 cups water

Steps

Mix dry ingredients in bowl, heat 1 cup of water in sauce pan, as water heats whip in dry ingredients. Bring to boil, remove from heat. Whip in oil, place back on heat, whip in 1 cup water and heat until boiling. Important to note: constantly stir! Otherwise the sauce sticks to the pan Keep sealed in fridge for up to 4 days.

Vegan cheese may be used on a large variety of meals such as pizza, potatoes, and nachos. The main ingredient for vegan cheese is nutritional yeast. Nutritional yeast is similar to brewers yeast however Nutritional yeast is non-active. It will not grow and cause fermentation like an active yeast such as brewers or bakers. Nutritional yeast and by extension this vegan cheese recipe is said to be high in protein as well as B vitamins and minerals. It is potent stuff, be careful!

I hesitate to call this recipe 'vegan cheese'; although the look and texture of the sauce is very similar, perhaps even identical to cheese it contains no dairy. Perhaps a more suitable title for this vegan cheese sauce would be simply nutritional yeast sauce.
